Songs, Poems & Finger Plays:

Sally Go Round the Sun

(Tune: Here we go Looby-Loo)

Sally go around the sun,
Sally go around the moon,
Sally go around the chimney pots
On a Sunday afternoon!

If You See Something Yellow
Tune: "If You're Happy and You Know It"

If you see something yellow, wiggle, jiggle.
If you see something yellow, wiggle, jiggle.
If you see something yellow,
Wiggle, jiggle just like Jell-O.
If you see something yellow, wiggle jiggle.

At the end of the song, have your children name the yellow things they see.

Yellow
Yellow is a star.
Yellow is the sun.
Yellow is the moon,
When the day is done.

Arts & Crafts:

You Are My Sunshine

Need: tag board circle cutout, yellow tissue paper pieces, yellow streamers, gold glitter, and glue.
Have the child glue the yellow tissue paper pieces all over the circle cutout to cover it. Then sprinkle glitter over circle. Finish by attaching the yellow streamers to the edges to create a sun.

Lemon Prints
Cut a quantity of lemons in half lengthwise. Set several aside to dry slightly. Store the remaining in the refrigerator. Then gather: drying lemon halves, white construction paper, newspaper, and yellow paint. Pour the yellow paint into a pan, and have the child dip the lemon into it. Dab onto newspaper, and then have them make a print on the construction paper. After you finish the prints, make lemonade with the remaining lemons!

Games and Activities:

Sing a Song of Yellow – Line a tray with yellow construction paper.  Arrange an assortment of yellow items on the tray.  These might include interlocking blocks, crayons, markers, pompoms, and buttons.  Have each of your children choose an item to hold while singing the following song.

Sing a Song of Yellow

(Sing to the tune of: “Sing a Song of Sixpence”)

Sing a song of yellow.

Sunshine and crayons, too.

Daffodils are yellow

When they are in bloom.

Buttons, yellow yarn,

And a yellow shoe.

You show me some yellow,

And I’ll show some to you.

Flower Power – Bring in a variety of real flowers.  (Sometimes a florist will donate older, wilting flowers.)  Give each of your children a small yellow square of yellow construction paper and one or more flowers to examine.  Help them identify the paper’s color as yellow and ask if they can find yellow somewhere in their flowers.  Discuss and compare their findings.  Put the flowers in a vase and display them in the classroom for everyone to enjoy.

Thinking About Yellow – At art time, help your children make hats from yellow construction paper.  Have them wear their hats at circle time, and wear one yourself.  Discuss the hats’ yellow color.  Tell the children that they are wearing “thinking hats.”  Ask them to think of some things that are yellow.  Let each child, in turn, name a yellow thing.  If a child has trouble naming something that is yellow, ask the group to help.  Record the answers on a piece of chart paper and include a small picture by each word.

What Can Be Yellow Predictable Chart – Title – What Can Be Yellow?  Sentence Frame – A _____ can be yellow. (Name)

What Is Yellow? – On a piece of yellow felt, write “What Is Yellow?”  Place it at the top of your flannelboard.  Cut flannelboard shapes from yellow felt.  You will need a shirt, a school bus, a dog, and a banana.  Distribute the shapes among your children, and then read the following rhyme.  With each verse, have the child who is holding the appropriate item place it on the board.

What Is Yellow?

What is yellow?

A yellow shirt-

On my friend playing in the dirt.

What is yellow?

A yellow school bus –

Taking children to school without a fuss.

What is yellow?

My big dog, Jones –

Digging in the yard for big old bones.

What is yellow?

A banana that’s sweet –

Take off the peel, and it’s ready to eat.

Yellow Day Activities
- Have a "Yellow Day", where you wear yellow, eat yellow foods, do many things outside in the sun. Have many arts and crafts that involve the color yellow or yellow items. You can do these things all on one day, or split them up so that you can do one thing each day. You can also play games that involve yellow: Count yellow counters, name as many things that are yellow as you can, plant yellow flowers and many more.

Sparkling Yellow Bottles - Fill a 16 oz. empty plastic soda bottle with water and enough light corn syrup to thicken. Pour in glitter, confetti, either in yellow or in gold, and seal the bottles securely. Let the children shake and have fun!

Yellow Printing - Cut lemons, yellow squash, and yellow bell peppers in half. Place folded paper towels in shallow containers and pour on small amounts of yellow tempera paint. Invite your children to press the cut sides of the fruit and veggies onto the paint-covered towels, and then stamp them on white paper to make prints.

Yellow Sun Catchers - Have your children tear yellow tissue paper into small pieces and arrange them on squares of clear Contact paper placed sticky-side up. Encourage the children to overlap the tissue pieces as they work. Cover each child's creation with a second square of Contact paper and punch a hole near one edge. Then tie loops of yellow yarn through the holes in the squares and hang the sun catchers in a window.

Yellow Fruit and Veggie Fun

In a large basket, place two each of various yellow fruits and veggies, such as lemons, bananas, apples, summer squash, bell peppers, and ears of corn. Let your children use the items for these games.

*   Find the matching pairs of fruits and veggies. Put the pairs on separate plates.

*   Select two matching fruits or veggies and hold one in each hand. Which is heavier? Which is lighter? Weigh the items to check responses.

*   Set out a shopping bag. Count the fruits and veggies while putting them into the bag and taking them out.

Yellow Books - Make a blank book for each of your children by fastening several pieces of yellow or white paper together. Print "My Yellow Book" and the child's name on the cover. Let your children cut or tear yellow pictures out of magazines or catalogs and glue them onto their book pages. Also, provide them with other yellow materials, such as tissue paper scraps, yarn, ribbon, or stickers, to add to their books, if you wish.

Yellow Riddles - Make up yellow riddles and invite your children to guess the answers. Here are a few to get you started.

*   I'm big and yellow. I have wheels. I take kids to and from school. What am I? (school bus)

*   I'm tasty, smooth, and yellow. You can spread me on toast or melt me and pour me over popcorn. What am I? (butter or margarine)

*   I'm a yellow flower. I grow in the grass. People call me "dandy." What am I? (dandelion)

Yellow Walk - Tape a yellow square of paper or poster board to the floor for each of your children. Also, tape a few squares of other colored paper or poster board to the floor. Then play music and have the children walk around the squares. Whenever you stop the music, have them each find a yellow square to stand on. Continue the game as long as interest lasts.

Recipes and Snacks:

Lemonade - Show the children how you can squeeze fresh lemons to make your own juice. Then let them go wild trying it for themselves! Be sure to have plenty of sugar on hand to add to your lemonade. Straight lemon juice will get you a LOT of sour expressions and pucker-ups!
