White Color Song

(tune:  Little Brown Jug)

W-h-i-t-e

That spells white.

Sing with me.

Milk is white,

And so is glue.

Ghosts are white,

And they say BOO!

W-h-i-t-e

That spells white.

Sing with me.

The clouds above,

The snow below,

Santa's beard, HO HO HO.

Songs, Rhymes, and Fingerplays

The White Song

I know a color that looks like snow
can you tell me what it's name is?
W-H-I-T-E, W-H-I-T-E, W-H-I-T-E
the color is called white.

White Color Song
(Tune: If you're Happy and You Know It)

If there's white on your shoes stand up quick
If there's white on your shoes stand up quick
If there's white on your shoes,
If there's white on your shoes,
If there's white on your shoes stand up quick!

Of course you can change the article of clothing and the action you do to extend the song or to include others that have white somewhere else.)

WHITE
Tune:  Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

W-H-I-T-E spells the color white for me.
Like the big clouds in the sky
Or the whip cream on my pie.
W-H-I-T-E spells the color white for me!

WHITE
Tune: Happy Birthday

W-H-I-T-E, W-H-I-T-E
Snowballs and popcorn
Are as white as can be.

White Song
(tune of Jingle Bells)

White, white, white.
White, white, white.
W    H    I    T    E.
A nurse's clothes.
A cloud that blows.
Shades of white to see.

Arts and Crafts

Use cotton balls, dollies, and white buttons to make a White on White Collage.

Whip Ivory Snow powder with water until the mixture is soft and fluffy. Let the kids finger-paint with the soap mixture on sheets of heavy white paper or tagboard. While the mixture is still wet, let them add Styrofoam packing pieces for snowflakes and cotton balls for clouds. Then let them sprinkle on glitter to add sparkle to their snow scenes.

Snow Scene

Give each child a sheet of pale blue construction paper and styrofoam packaging chips. Let them create a winter scene. These turn out to be lovely three dimensional projects.

Paint with Salt

I give each child a small dixie cup 1/2 full of white tempera paint. I allow the child to spoon in as much table salt as they want and mix it into their paint. Next they take a piece of colored paper and paint anything they want on the paper. When dry the paint will have a rough texture and sparkle from the salt. As the children paint with this salt mixture they LOVE the gritty, bumpy, noisy texture and sounds that occur. Some will paint designs....but most enjoy it so much they paint the entire paper white. Any extra paint that is left I pour together in a larger paint cup and place it at the easel.

Snowstorm Art

Material: liquid starch or glue, brush or q-tips, construction paper, rice

1. Generously brush starch or glue onto paper
2. Sprinkle rice on paper
3. Shake off excess

Sparkle Snow Paint

1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup water

Mix together and put in a squeeze bottle. Squeeze doughy paint out on to black construction paper. Make anything snowy, snowflakes, snowmen, - we made snow covered mountains with the moon and northern lights. Let dry thoroughly and it will sparkle. May also be painted (when dry) and allowed to dry again. This is a great 3 dimensional effect for snow.

White On White

Create a snowy day picture by using only white materials. Give each child a styrofoam tray to be used as a base for the picture. Provide an assortment of white material (cotton balls, white string, rice, white straws) to glue on to the tray to create snow day scene.

An idea for the color white would be: Get a large piece of black paper or any dark color....have the children make a white collage---use various items such as--q-tips, cotton balls, marshmallows, etc.

Water Color Surprise

Put out white paper, water colors, paint brushes, water cups & masking tape. The teacher rips off different lengths of masking tape & sticks it to the edge of the table. The children take these masking tape strips and tape them any way they want on their white construction paper. (I have had children just randomly lay the tape down and I have had children form the tape into letters and create their entire name. Whatever they come up with is fine.) Once they have taped down all the tape that they want, I tell them to watercolor their entire paper....tape & all. It is important that they paint the entire paper...otherwise the results are disappointing. When done we hang them up to dry. On another day I lift up the edges of the pieces of tape and then call the children to the table. I tell them to CAREFULLY pull their masking tape pieces off of their pictures. What appears?.....the WHITE spaces that were hiding under the masking tape that did not get painted. These are very striking, a fun surprise for the children & we always talk about HOW did this happen!!

Finely grate one bar Ivory soap. Mix the grated soap with one cup of water and one tablespoon glycerine. Use an electric mixer to beat the mixture until peaks form. The soap snow can then be used in many ways.

Kiddie Candles
Help the children melt a white crayon and a colored crayon on a warming tray. Pour into a soap or candle mold. Let cool. Now the children made there own pastel crayons. This is a good opportunity to teach the children that white, mixed with other colors, blends to a lighter shade of the original color (pastels!).

WHITE NECKLACES
From white tissue paper or other paper, cut out small shapes, such as circles or squares. Punch a hole in the middle of each shape. Then let your children string the shapes on pieces of white yarn to make necklaces.

Cool Whip Fingerpaint

Have kids use Cool Whip to fingerpaint with.  A fun, sweet, and sensory activity.  They can even eat the leftovers!

Games and Activities

Large Motor

Use cotton balls and plastic spoons to pretend to shovel, carry, scoop, etc. Then run, hop, and scoop it up. Try blowing the cottonballs across the floor with their own air.

White Riddles

Challenge your children to solve the following riddles. Give one clue at a time and the let children guess before offering the next clue.

1. I’m white. I’m cold. I’m round. I’m made of snow. (A snowball).

2. I’m white. I’m fluffy. I float around high in the sky. (A cloud)

3. I’m white. You pop me in a pan or an oven. I’m tasty with butter and salt. (popcorn)

4. I’m white. I’m cold, I’m sweet to eat in a cone. (Vanilla ice cream).

Where Is It White?

Gather a number of items that are white on the outside and/or white on the inside. Possibilities include a hard cooked brown shelled egg, a hard cooked white shelled egg, a white crayon, an apple, a cotton ball and an envelop. Have your children examine each item and tell whether it is white on the outside. Set aside the items that are not white on the outside. Then ask the children to tell you whether the items are white on the inside. How can they find out? Can they think of others items that are white on the inside or outside?

White on White

Pass a roll of white toilet tissue around the circle and have each of your children tear off one square to place on the floor. Now pass around a white basket or plastic bin containing small items, some white and others not white. Let each child select a white item to place on his or her white square. Include enough white items for every child to find one.

White Web

Hold on to the loose end of a ball of white yarn and roll it to one of your children who is wearing white. Have that child grab the yarn and roll the rest of the yarn ball to another child who is wearing white. Continue while interest lasts. Then examine the white web you’ve constructed.

Snowflake Investigations

Take a magnifying glass outside to observe the snowflakes on a dark coat or on dark paper.

Sensory table

Fill your sensory table with white packing foam pieces and confetti. Or..... if it snows where you teach, bring in a couple of buckets of snow; put the buckets in the sensory table and have children "color" the snow. Use paintbrushes and food coloring.

Sensory Ideas

salt/sugar/flour/icing sugar, styroafoam balls, white yarn, streamers, white paper shredded up (Let children use scissors to cut it up),snow in the winter time, white finger paint.

Colored Ghosts

Once there was a WHITE ghost named __________ who was very hungry. He looked in the refrigerator and found a banana. He ate it and turned YELLOW.

The ghost was still hungry so he ate an apple and he turned RED.

The ghost became very thirsty so he drank some chocolate milk and he turned BROWN.

The ghost really liked vegetables so he ate a carrot and turned ORANGE. He also ate a pepper and turned GREEN.

The ghost was tired after eating so much food that he thought he would have one more drink so he drank some milk and he turned WHITE once again.

This flannel board story can be as short or as long as you like. Just change the ghost every time he eats some food. Have the children say the color that the ghost changes into.

WHITE MEMORY GAME

On a tray, place several white items, such as a piece of chalk, a cotton ball, an envelope, a facial tissue, and a sugar cube. Allow your children to examine the items for a minute or two. Then cover the tray with a white cloth and have the children try to name the items from memory. Or secretly remove one item and ask the children to tell you which one is missing.

LAUNDRY TIME
Collect clean items of both white and colored clothing. Mix up the items and place them in a box. Invite your children to "sort the laundry" by placing all the white clothes in one basket and all the colored clothes in another one.

MARY'S LITTLE LAMB PUPPETS
Give your children lamb shapes cut from heavy white paper to decorate with glued-on cotton. Help them add faces to their lambs with markers and tape on craft sticks for handles. Have the children use their puppets while reciting or singing "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

WHAT'S WHITE?
For each of your children, tape a white paper circle to the floor. Let the children dance around while you name different colored items. Whenever they hear the name of something white, have them stop dancing and stand on a white circle. Continue as long as you wish.

After reading It Looked Like Spilt Milk, drop a small amount of white paint on blue paper and complete this sentence, "It looked like spilt milk, but it was really _________________."

Make a classbook: What is White?
Have kids find things that are that white and put that white item on their white color page.

Colored Polar Bear Story & Activity
Contributed by KinderKorner subscriber Renate from Germany

Once upon a time there was a beautiful white polar bear who often visited
the St. Lawrence Island in Alaska. Now on this island, you find a little
schoolhouse filled with many boys and girls and their beloved teacher,
Ms. Andrews.

It seems as though a neighboring child from Siberia ventured
across the Bering Strait to St. Lawrence Island. Her name was Tatiana,
and she had beautiful golden hair. As she explored the island, she soon
met Mr. Polar Bear.

The children watched out the windows of the
schoolhouse as the bear wished he had golden hair like Tatiana's. He shut
his eyes tightly and wished very hard for golden hair.

Now will you just shut your eyes for a moment
and help polar bear make his wish?
(Teacher puts 2 drops of yellow food coloring in bear bottle)
Now you may open your eyes!
AMAZING!
A blond polar bear- Oh, my goodness!

Do you know what the children
shouted out the windows of the schoolhouse? Do you think they liked  a BLOND polar bear?

Teacher gets children to slap, slap, clap, clap, and snap and say:
POLAR BEAR, POLAR BEAR
YOU ARE A SIGHT!
YOUR COLOR WAS RIGHT
WHEN YOU WERE WHITE!

Mr. Polar Bear was MIGHTY SAD! He thought the children would like his
new golden color! He climbed on an iceberg and began to think about his
problem.

Now, as Mr. Bear rested, he caught a new scent in the air. What did
he smell? As he raised his head and looked around, he saw a young boy coming closer.

Rene was from the GREEN forests of Canada. He wore a green hat, a
green sweater, green pants, and green boots. Guess what he had in his
pocket? Rene had a GREEN lollipop! Polar Bear thought GREEN must be the most beautiful color in the world! Maybe he should be a green bear. He
shut his eyes and began to wish he was green. Can you help Mr. Bear?

(Teacher puts 2 drops of blue in)
Now he was a GREEN polar bear!! But the children said:
 (slap,slap...repeat chant above)

Now this made Mr. Bear feel real bad. He pouted and pouted. Polar
bear began to walk across the snow. As he topped a big snow drift, he met
COUSIN BROWN BEAR from Kodiak Island. Cousin Brown Bear had followed the path of green tears that cam from polar bear.

The two bears had a nice, long
visit and before long, Polar Bear began to admire his SMART
COUSIN. The Kodiak Bear is the world's largest bear and gets angry very
quickly.  Polar Bear thinks maybe the children would like him if he were brown
instead.    Let's shut our eyes and wish with Polar Bear.

(Teacher adds 2 drops of red, and children repeat chant above)

Polar Bear felt so bad, he ran away from the children and dove in the ice
cold waters of the Bering Sea.  Polar  bears are the best swimmers of all
bears. His thick, heavy fur was now BROWN and looked quite strange as the
children of Gambel watched him swim DEEP, DEEP, DEEP into the sea.

Now, if you will just shut your eyes
and think about Polar Bear swimming around under the cold, cold water, a
tiny bit of Alaska magic might happen.

(Teacher bleaches the water, while their eyes are closed, and continues to talk
about polar bear swimming while the bleach takes effect)

Polar Bear swims up, up, up, up, to the surface and guess what!

Children chant:
 POLAR BEAR, POLAR BEAR
Your color IS right!
WE LOVE YOU!
WE LOVE YOU!
YOU ARE WHITE!

Polar Bear decided NEVER to change his color again. After all, polar
bears are supposed to be WHITE, RIGHT?

The End

I use a honey bottle that's shaped like a bear I got from the grocery store. I sit at a table and have the children sit on the floor in front of  the table. I put the bear bottle (filled about an inch from the top with water),  in front of a white board and put my magic (food coloring and bleach) behind the board. Even if the kids watch you put in the food coloring, it's still "magic" to them, because you make green by adding blue to yellow, etc. My kids always love it, and they learn alot about bears and some geography at the same time!
I hope your kiddos enjoy it as well.
