Green

Green Song

(Sing to the tune of: Row, Row, Row Your Boat)

G R E E N, G R E E N

I know how to spell green

G R E E N

Caterpillars are green

And grasshoppers, too.

I know how to spell green

G R E E N

Songs, Rhymes, and Fingerplays

Green
(Tune: BINGO)
There is a color we all know
Can you guess what it is?
 G-R-E-E-N
 G-R-E-E-N
 G-R-E-E-N
 Green is what that spells.
 The grass and leaves outside
are green as green as they can be.
 G-R-E-E-N
 G-R-E-E-N
 G-R-E-E-N
 Green is what that spells!

Color Song
(Tune: If you're Happy and You Know It)
If there's green on your shoes stand up quick
If there's green on your shoes stand up quick
If there's green on your shoes,
If there's green on your shoes,
If there's green on your shoes stand up quick!

(Of course, you can change the article of clothing and the action you do to extend the song or to include others that have green somewhere else.)

Color Hop Song
(tune of Old MacDonald)
I see something that is green
Do you see it too?
I see something that is green.
HOP there if you do.
With a hop, hop here
And a hop, hop there. Hurry up! Hop it up!
Hop as fast as you dare.
I see something that is green.
Do you see it too?

(Have children tell you what they found)

Peter Piper
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers;
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked.
If Peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?

Green
(To the tune of "
London Bridge is Falling Down")
G-R-E-E-N spells green,
Like a frog,
Or a tree.
G-R-E-E-N spells green,
Just like broccoli.

Green
Green is grass,
String beans and peas.
Green is the branches
on Christmas trees.

Green Giant
There lived a green giant whose name was Sam.
His hair was the color of strawberry jam.
He had one brown and one blue eye,
And a beard the color of pumpkin pie.
His coat and pants were gay and bright,
Like a peppermint stick, all red and white.
His shoes were as brown as a chocolate drop.
His stockings were yellow as lemon pop.
His hat was the color of ginger bread
With a tall, tall feather of raspberry red.

Green
Green is the grass
and the watermelon skin,
fourth color in the rainbow,
the emeralds in a ring.
Bright green apples
are bitter to the tongue,
but spinach and broccoli-
I eat them up yum!
Green mold is medicine
known as penicillin,
and water fights with
green balloons sure are thrillin'.
Green means go
when driving, beep! beep!
and green lily pads
are where the frogs sleep.
For flowers and trees,
and the prickly cactus too-
green is important,
as it is for me and you.

GREEN
Tune:  Bingo

There was a farmer who had a snake
 and it was very green.
 g-r-e-e-n, g-r-e-e-n, g-r-e-e-n
 and it was very green.

There was a farmer who had an alligator
 and it was very green.
 g-r-e-e-n, g-r-e-e-n, g-r-e-e-n
 and it was very green.

There was a farmer who had a frog
 and it was very green.
 g-r-e-e-n, g-r-e-e-n, g-r-e-e-n
 and it was very green.

They all lived in the long green grass
 and they were very green.
 g-r-e-e-n, g-r-e-e-n, g-r-e-e-n
 and they were very green.

Games and Activities

*   A Green Story – Gather an assortment of flannelboard figures, including a number of green ones.  Pass out a figure to each of your children.  Ask the children with green figures to come up and put them on the flannelboard in a line.  Then make up a story that includes all of the figures in the order they appear.

*   Green Gobbler – On the side of a large box, paint or draw a (not-too-scary) green monster face with a big mouth.  Cut out a mouth opening with a utility knife.  Bring the monster to circle time and explain that this is the Green Gobbler.  It is always hungry, but it will eat green things.  Ask your children to think of things that the monster will eat.  List their suggestions on chart paper.  Extension: As a follow-up activity, place the Green Gobbler in the classroom where the children can feed it green items and pictures of green items.

*   Eat Your Greens – Before circle time, have your children cut or tear pictures of foods from magazines.  At circle time, put a green disposable plate on the floor and spread the magazine pictures around it.  Explain to the children that only green foods can go on the plate.  Have them decide which foods can be placed there.

*   Green Things We Know – Brainstorm a list of green things.  With a green marker, write each word and make a quick sketch of the item on an index card, using a new card for each word and corresponding sketch.  Display each card.  Now turn the card over and let the children choose one card.  Have the group help each child read his or her card and add the words“…is green.” For example, “Jake’s hat is green.”

*   Green Day - Have a green day and have everyone come dressed in green.

*   Green Search and Find Games - Create one of these games for each of your children. Use a rubber stamp to make several green prints at random on a piece of white paper. Fill the rest of the paper with identical stamped-on prints in other colors. To play, have the child search for the green prints and circle them with a green crayon or marker.

*   Green Is For “Go” - From construction paper, cut out a large red circle and a large green circle. Turn the circles into signs by attaching a craft stick handle to each one. In an open area, invite your children to drive pretend cars in a large circle. As they do so, hold up the red sign to bring the drivers to a stop and the green sign to signal that they can go. Then let the children take turns holding up the signs.

Green Bean Math Games
Use green jellybeans for playing these games with your group.

Place jellybeans in a zipper-top plastic bag. After estimating the number inside, count, then eat.

Number five paper bowls from 1 to 5 and set out 15 jellybeans. Take turns putting matching numbers of jellybeans into the bowls.

Figure out how many jellybeans are needed to give one to each person in the group. Count out that number, hand out the jellybeans, and enjoy.

Making Green
With your children, try these experiments to discover what happens when blue and yellow are mixed together.

Pour light corn syrup into a zipper-top plastic bag. Add drops of blue and yellow food coloring, seal the bag, and tip it back and forth to see the colors blend and turn to green.

Squeeze drops of blue and yellow food coloring onto white paper towels or coffee filters. Watch green appear as the colors blend.

Arts and Crafts

Fun With Green
Get some yellow construction paper and cut out shapes in blue tissue paper and gluing them on so they make....Green!

Green Finger Paint
1 medium Ziploc bag
Shaving cream (white)
Food coloring
Squirt white shaving cream inside the Ziploc bag, add a few drops of food coloring, and close the bag, making sure that all the air is out. This gives your child the opportunity to explore mixing colors (blue and yellow makes green, etc.) -- and there's no mess to clean up afterwards! Or clip a corner & finger paint with it.

Magic Frog
Run off a cute frog black line on bright yellow construction paper, then have the kids put dots on the frog with "blue" bingo markers. It is magic to them to see the dots turn out "green" on the frog! They then cut the frogs out and put them in their color booklets they are making on the GREEN page.

”Oscar the Grouch”
Using 35 mm film canisters, have the children cut a little square of newspaper (approx. 3X3") put a drop of glue in the bottom of the canister and then put the newspaper in so some sticks out of the top; glue one green pompon on the newspaper, and glue two tiny squiggle eyes on the pompon (they will need help with the eyes.) it looks just like Oscar the Grouch in his garbage can. You can get all the film canisters that you need free at a film/camera store.

Green Collage Paintings
Invite your children to help tear or cut green pictures out of magazines. Give them large pieces of white paper, and set out green tempera paint. Let the children brush the paint on their papers. While they are working, have them choose the pictures they want and stick them onto the wet paint to create collages.

Shades of Green
Pour white tempera paint into muffin tins or small cups. Show your children how to mix the white paint with green tempera to create various shades of green. Then give them small brushes or cotton swabs and let them use their new shades of green to paint designs on paper
