Have the children paint spring-type clothespins black to use as bat bodies. Then clip the bats around the room on curtains, picture frames, book covers, etc.

Games and Activities

LITTLE BLACK BOOKS

Make blank books with white pages and black covers. Help your children try one or more of these ideas.

·         Cut black pictures out of magazines to glue on their book pages.

·         Glue on black textured materials-plastic, sandpaper, fabric, yarn, paper.

·         Make prints on the pages with black inkpads and any kind of rubber stamps.

·         Stamp on black fingerprints and use pens to turn them into bugs, spiders, cars, planes-anything the children can imagine!

BLACK COUNTING GAMES
Try one or more of these games with your children.

·         Count black crayons or markers.

·         Count the number of children with black hair.

·         String and count black buttons on a black shoelace.

·         Guess the number of black jellybeans in a jar, open, count together, and eat!

·         Number the cups in an egg carton from 1 to 12. Fill the cups with matching numbers of black beans.

Black Cats

Show your children pictures of black cats. Then have them act out the following poem.

Black cats arch their backs,
Meow, meow, meow.
They puff out their tails
And show their claws,
Meow, meow, meow.

Black cats yowl and hiss,
“Hiss-ss-ss-ss-ss.”
“Look at me, I'm scary”
Is what they seem to say.
“Hiss-ss-ss-ss-ss.”

But black cats can be gentle,
Meow, meow, meow.
They curl in your lap

And take a nap,
Meow, meow, meow.

Scat The Cat

Once upon a time, there was a little BLACK cat & his name was Scat the Cat. One day he looked around & saw that all his brothers & sisters & friends were black, too. Scat decided he would like to be a different color so he said:

"I'm Scat the Cat,
I'm sassy & fat,
And I can change my color,
Just like that!" (snap fingers)

All of a sudden he was GREEN like the trees & grass. What else is green like Scat? He went out to play with his friends, but they couldn't find him because he was the color of the trees & grass. He was very unhappy & decided he didn't want to be green anymore,so he said:

"I'm Scat the Cat,
I'm sassy & fat,
And I can change my color,
Just like that!" (snap fingers)

Then Scat turned BLUE like the water, the sky, & what else? He walked to the lake, looked at himself, & fell in the water! But poor Scat couldn't swim...he called for help but his friends couldn't see him because he was blue like the water. Just then his friend, Timothy Turtle, caught him and carried him safely to shore. Scat didn't want to be blue anymore, so he said:

"I'm Scat the Cat,
I'm sassy and fat,
And I can change my color,
Just like that!" (snap fingers)

Then Scat turned YELLOW like the sun. On his way through the jungle, he met his cousin Leo the Lion.Leo said, "Grrrrrrrrrr! I'm the only one who is supposed to be yellow." Scat was so afraid that he said:

"I'm Scat the Cat,
I'm sassy and fat,

And I can change my color,
Just like that!" (snap fingers)

Next, Scat turned RED like an apple. What else is the color red? He went out to play with his brothers & sisters & friends, but they all laughed at him. "Who ever heard of a red cat," they said. No one played with him & he felt so sad. "I don't want to be red. I don't want to be yellow like Leo the Lion, I don't want to be blue like the water, and I don't want to be green like the grass. I want to be black again just like my brothers & sisters & friends. I'd like to have lots of cats to play with so he said:

"I'm Scat the Cat,
I'm sassy and fat,
And I can change my color,
Just like that!" (snap fingers)

Scat changed back to BLACK & after that he was happy just being himself.

Extension Suggestions: Discuss how special it is to be just the way we are. Ask children what they like best about themselves. If you don't have a flannel board, you can still do this using paper. Take a file folder & cut a cat pattern out of one side. The cat looks like a cat sitting. You don’t see the legs. The cat pattern will be cut out of the center of the folder so it will kind of look like a stencil. Staple the ends of the folder together to make a pocket. Insert 7x10 inch sheets of construction paper in the pocket & remove one at a time as you tell the story.

What Shall I Wear? - Tell your children that you want to dress so that you cant be seen at night. Bring in a black trunk or suitcase of clothes (including some all-black ones) and have them help you select things to wear; a black hat, black shoes and hose, a black shirt or blouse, black slacks or a skirt.

Black Dots - Draw a black dot on a sheet of paper for each of your children. Show a few of the pages to your children and explain that these are unfinished pictures. Brainstorm all the things this back dot might be, like a raisin in a cookie, the center of an exotic flower, or a bowling ball. After the children have generated plenty of ideas, give each of your children a clipboard, one of the papers, and a black crayon or marker. Challenge the children to finish their pictures. Give them a chance to show their pictures and tell what they have made.

The Photographer - Bring a black camera to the circle. A broken camera is fine. Ask your children to pretend that the camera will take pictures of black items only. Pass the camera around the circle. Have each child in turn pretend to take a photo of real or imaginary black things.

Extension: As a follow-up activity, place the camera in your dramatic play area.

Science - Black is made up of many different colors. Each color absorbs light, then reflects its color. All colors combined absorb light of many different colors and reflects very little, so you end up with black! This experiment, and many other science experiments, can be found on The Science Explorer, a Web site devoted to educating children about science.

Black Day - Dress in black clothes for the day.  Use paper plates and napkins that are the color of the day for snack time.

Black Walk - Take a walk to look for a particular color of car.

Black Foods Chart - Make a chart listing foods that are black.

Things That Are Black – Write and quick sketch any items that are black onto chart paper.

Things That Can Be Black Predictable Chart – Title: Things That Can Be Black; Sentence Frame: A/An _______ can be black. (Name)

Estimation Station - Try guessing how many of the same colored buttons, beads, etc., there are in a glass jar, then count to see who came the closest.

Black Scavenger Hunt - Plan a scavenger hunt to search for objects that are black.

Water Table Sculptures - Freeze water tinted with black food coloring in milk cartons to make ice sculptures for the water table.

Black Stacks - Use black paper cups for stacking in pyramids or for counting.

Black Rice - Tint rice with black food coloring to use for sandbox play.

Read "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" by Trapani; then do a directed drawing of a spider web and add a die cut spider.

Recite Little Miss Muffet, play act it, and do a cut and paste sequence. You can also made spider hats using a black circle and four long black legs taped in the middle to make eight. Then accordion-fold the legs.

After reading Ten Black Dots, have them make their own version.  A shortcut would be just to give every child 10 black dots (punch out black paper with a hole punch if you don't want to buy black stickers) and make only one page with all ten dots.

Eat Oreos and graph which way they like to eat it

(separate first and lick off the filling, eat it all

together, etc.)

Make a large black crayon out of butcher paper. Using chalk to write, brainstorm everything they can thing of that is the color black.
