Children’s Literature Festival

March 2012

In March of 2012, 4th and 5th grade students will have an opportunity to attend the Reading Reptile Bookstore’s “DNA Children’s Literature Festival”.  At the Literature Festival, students will get to listen to well-known authors.  It’s a fun and beneficial day, because students learn the inspirations behind some of their favorite stories along with some tips to add to their own writer’s “toolbox”.  Following the literature festival, students will have the option to attend an evening event at school which will include food, fun, and games.

Those students who wish to participate must read a total of at least 10 books.

*4 of the 10 must be 2011-2012 Mark Twain Award nominees

The remaining six books may be from any or all of the following categories:

*Any of the past Mark Twain Award winners and nominees.  Lists of these books are available here: Mark Twain Award Books

*Any of the past Newbery Award winners or honor books.  Lists of these books are available here:  Newbery Award books

Fifth grade students may not use any of the books they read and submitted as fourth graders.

For each book read, students will complete an online book questionnaire .  On the questionnaire page, there are options for students who would like to substitute two questionnaires for a different project.  Students will keep track of their books with the Literature Festival Book Log Sheet, which will be turned in after all 10 books have been read.

Along with reading the 10 books, completing the book log and questionnaires, students will participate in discussions over four of the 10 books that they have read.  Discussions will be one-on-one with a Northview staff member.  The adult will sign the student’s log sheet after each discussion.  Only school staff members can sign a student’s log sheet.

OR

Click here for other alternatives to discussions.  Each optional project is worth two discussions.

Students will need to pace themselves in order to complete these requirements.  The first deadline is a “half-way checkpoint” that students will need to meet in order to continue to qualify.  By Wednesday, December 21, 2011, students will need to have read at least five books, completed and submitted five questionnaires, and discussed two books with a Northview staff member.

All of this work—the 10 books read, 10 questionnaires, 4 discussions, and log sheet—will be due on Friday, February 24, 2012.  There are few, if any, instances where an exception can be made to this deadline.

If you are interested in participating, please return this sheet to your child’s teacher by Friday, September 30, 2011.  We use this permission slip to obtain a preliminary head count for planning purposes.

My child has stated he/she is interested in participating in this literacy experience.  I support my child in his/her decision.  I understand that half of the requirements need to be met by December 21, 2011, and that ALL requirements need to be met by February 24, 2012.
