Children’s Lit Fest Lock-In

March 2010

In March 2010, 4th and 5th grade students will have the opportunity to attend a “Lit Fest Lock-In” sleepover at Northview Elementary School.  This fun event is still “under construction”, but much like last year’s Lock-In,  we plan to have at least one author to interact with the students as well as various fun and games.  Of course there could be pizza and snacks as well!

Those students who wish to attend must read a total of at least 10 books.

*4 of the 10 must be 2009-2010 Mark Twain Award nominees

The remaining six books may be from any or all of the following categories:

*Any of the past Mark Twain Award winners and nominees.  Lists of these books are available at: http://www.mcpl.lib.mo.us/readers/awards/juv/mt-master.htm

Click on the mt-master.pdf link.

*Any of the past Newbery Award winners.  Note that they must be Newbery-winning books, not nominee/honor books!  The list of Newbery winners is available at

 http://www.mcpl.lib.mo.us/readers/awards/juv/newbery.htm

Fifth grade students may not use any of the books they read and submitted while in fourth grade.  For each book read, students will complete a book questionnaire, which is then turned in at the Northview library.  Students will keep track of their books with the Literature Festival Book Log Sheet, which will be turned in after all 10 books have been read.

Along with reading the 10 books, completing the book log and questionnaires, students will participate in discussions over four of the 10 books that they have read.  Discussions will be one-on-one with a library staff member, teacher, or parent volunteer.  Students will have access to a schedule of adults with whom they can have their Literature Festival book discussions.  The adult will sign the student’s log sheet after each discussion.

OR

Students may write up to two book reviews in the Destiny library catalog as a substitute for up to two of their book discussions.  Students will receive instructions in Fall 2009 about logging into Destiny for this purpose.

Students will need to pace themselves in order to complete these requirements.  By Friday, December 18, students will need to have read at least five books, completed and submitted five questionnaires, and discussed two books with one of the “official” adult discussion partners.

All of this work—the 10 books read, 10 questionnaires, 4 discussions, and log sheet—will be due on Friday, February 19.  There are few, if any, instances where an exception can be made to this deadline.

All of this information can be found on the Northview Elementary School web page at

If you are interested in participating, please return this sheet to your child’s teacher by Friday, September 18, 2009.  We use this permission slip to obtain a preliminary head count for planning purposes.

My child has stated he/she is interested in participating in this literacy experience.  I support my child in his/her decision.  I understand that half of the requirements need to be met by December 19, 2008.
