April 23rd, 2012

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We’re back to our regular lunch schedule now that MAP is over.  The second graders did a good job of encouraging the older students to do well on the test, and they also did a good job of staying quiet in the hallway.

Take Your Child To Work day is on Thursday of this week.  I have not had many responses to this opportunity.  Please let me know if you did not receive a TYCTWD form and would like one.

Next Monday, 30th of April was originally planned to be a full day of staff development.   However, in order to make up our single snow day, it will now be a half day of school for students, dismissing at 12:30 p.m.

Reading Homework:  Students should read at home for at least ten minutes every school day.  If they cannot read the words, parents may read to them.  This should be a pleasant experience.  Our scheduled library time has not yet been scheduled.

.

Spelling Homework:  Every student is required to learn the list of spelling words.  Spelling words will be assigned on Monday, and tested on Friday.  A list of spelling assignments may be found in the back of your child’s planner.

Planners:

The Reading Minutes section is for an adult to record and verify the number of minutes the student has spent in reading activity at home that day.  Please record the number of minutes spent reading at the weekend in Friday’s box.  Although the new week officially starts on Sunday, for the purpose of recording reading minutes we’ll count Monday as day 1.

The Spelling Words section is where the student will write the week’s spelling words.  The test will be on the Friday of that week.

The Reading Minute Target box is located under the spelling words section.  This will record the number of minutes read at home by the child that week, and the cumulative total.  When your child meets the weekly goal of 50 minutes, he or she will receive a sticker to put on a chart.  Students who make their weekly goal every week during the months October- March will receive a coupon for a free Pizza Hut personal pan pizza.  Students who reach the annual goal of 1770 minutes will receive a reading medal in May.

If you haven’t already joined the Mid-Continent Public Library, I would encourage you to do so.  You are able to check out loads of books free of charge from the public library to read at home.  In addition, students may check out books from Clardy Media Center and my class library.

Please keep the planner in your child’s backpack so that it comes back to school every day.  Thank you for co-operation in using the planner!

Take-Home Folders: The parent-teacher communication folder goes home every night and should come back every morning, even if there is nothing in it.  Please do not remove the planner from the folder.

Class Library Books:  Children are welcome to borrow books from my class library.  Please help them to remember to return them so that others may also borrow them.

Footwear: The school nurse has asked me to remind you that flip-flops and crocs are not appropriate footwear for school.  This is a safety issue.  Your child’s feet are much less likely to be injured in tennis shoes.

Transport:  If your child is going home a different way than usual, I must have a note or an e-mail from you about it.  Alternatively you may call the office to let them know of the change (413-6800) and the office staff will let me know of it.
